About the Essays*

The essays summon the feeling of a conversation you might have with a friend that starts out - "Hey, have you ever wondered why...." Musing about various prosaic aspects of daily life, I flit from subject to subject like someone browsing aimlessly through a curiosity shop, picking up a trivial but interesting question, turning it over and examining it from some droll and unusual angle, putting it down and moving on to the next amusing item. Here are some of the questions I ponder as my imagination wanders:

Humorous essays I've written on other topics of interest to women ponder questions such as these:

• why I have given myself a pass on what I look like from behind and suspect many other women have done the same
• why I will never be the kind of woman that raises her hand to volunteer to be the office fire monitor (to stay behind and put yellow stickies on the doors to show the firemen there’s nobody inside) and other acts of selflessness of which I am incapable
• what marriage would look like if it were reinvented by women; the pluses and minuses of having multiple husbands, and the benefits of borrowing a concept from the time share industry involving the short-term leasing of husbands
• shopping with my mother and why it feels much the same at middle-age as it did in middle-school
• why your hair should be your favorite body part (written by your hair)
• what are the odds you will write a best seller, your pajamas will spontaneously combust, or you will develop an urge to chew coal if you become pregnant, and why if you're trying to lose weight you should laugh when you kiss and eat all your rich desserts in California, and other interesting things we can learn from numbers

and other subjects similarly worthy of considered analysis.
